Hallo, zusammen.
Ich bin Wen.
In this video and in the following videos
I’m going to teach you German pronounciation rules
And here I promise you
You will soon be able to pronounce every German word
Just in 2 hours.
Yes, don’t doubt it.
You will definitely be able to pronounce every German word
Just in 3 hours.
Every! Here I mean all (the German words)
Before we start to learn German pronounciation
here are some extremely important concepts
that you need to bear in mind
First, we can apply most of the English pronouciation rules to German
For example
when the letter b, d, and g stand before a vowel
they are pronounced [b], [d] and [g]
in both Englisch and German
So if your mother language is English
or if you are already familiar with English
Congratulations!
Because you can apply most of the English pronouciation rules to German
The second good news that I’m going to tell you is that
The German pronouciation is fixed.
If you ask me to choose one word to describe German pronounciation
I will definitely choose this word
Systematic!
What do I mean by the word Systematic?
For example
The letter A has lots of different pronounciations in English
all, car, again, apple, language
Can you imagine
how struggling and frustrated I was
when I learned the English pronouciation in high school
But in German, no. We don’t have this problem
When you see the letter A stands in a word
it will always be pronouced [a]
Just like the [a] sound of the word- car and far in English
Of course, There are differences between long vowel and short vowel
But we will talk about this in the following videos
So this is the second thing that you need to bear in mind
When you see a German word
you can use the rules you’ve learnt to pronounce it
although you don’t understand the meaning of this word
But don’t worry. The rules are limited.
And that’s the reason why I choose systematic
to describe the German pronounciaton.
The third thing that you need to remember is that
Sometimes you will encounter some words
and their pronounciations don’t accord with the rules you’ve learnt
At this moment, please don’t panic
You don’t learn wrong and I don’t teach wrong, either
That is because these words are loanwords in German.
Now let me make a conclusion for you
We can divide all the words into 2 categories
The first category is German word
which means we can use the rules we’ve learnt to pronounce all of them
This also means it’s unnecessary for us to memorize their pronounciations
since their pronounciations are systematic
The second category is loanword
For this part, since their pronounciations don’t accord with the rules we’ve learnt
we need to spend our extra energy and time to memorize their pronounciations
But don’t panic
The loanwords in German are not that much
With 10 minutes, you will be able to pronounce
the most common used loanwords in German
And we will discuss the loanwords at the end of our pronounciation lessons
The fourth thing that I need to tell you is that
I will not categorize those pronounciation knowledges
which are used in both English and German
to the so-called German pronounciation rules.
For example
B is pronounced [b]
D is pronounced [d]
G is pronounced [g]
No. I will not list them to the rules
Since they are used in both English and German
But when I giude you to pronounce a German word
I will still mention these shared rules shortly
because we have to take good care of those
who are not familiar with English
The last point I must let you know ist that
What’s the first step of learning German?
Jump into grammar? No!
Memorize 20 vocabularies everyday? No!
Buy a whole set of learning materials? No!
Make a German boyfriend or girlfriend?
Well… I will not stop you
since, according to my own experience,
this is really the fastest way to improve German
I’ve been teaching German for almost four years
And in the past four years
I always warn my students
Ok, ok. Not warn. It’s encourage.
the first step of learning German
Not to force you to memorize 20 vocabularies everyday
Not to jump into Grammar directly
the first step of learning German
is to familiarize the German pronounciation rules
as soon as possible
If you do this
I mean to familiarize the German pronounciation rules
Afterwards you will definitely feel that
it takes you much less time and energy to memorize a German word
And you will definitely feel that
it takes you much less time and energy to improve your speaking skills
Now you might be wondering
What’s the standard of familiarity
The standard will be
When you see a German word
You are able to pronounce it on the spot
Even though you don’t understand the meaning of it
It might be too exaggerated
that I said at the beginning of this video
that you will be able to pronounce every German words
Just in 3 hours
I admit it’s a little wee bit too exaggerated
But according to my past teaching experience
If you are willing to spend some time every day
to practice the rules you’ve learnt
It’s very usual that after a month or two
you’ve already reach the standard
When seeing a word, and able to pronounce it on the spot
So what I’ve said above is just like a warming up
before we start to learn German
Now please press the next video
And let’s start to learn the German pronounciation right now.
